Holger Badstuber has completed his move to Stuttgart on a free transfer, the Bundesliga side have confirmed.
The former Bayern Munich centre-back, who was once a youth at the club, has endured a wretched few years due to injury problems, and last season was only able to turn out 12 times for Schalke.
Nevertheless, Stuttgart, who won promotion to the top flight last term by winning the 2. Bundesliga, believe they have acquired a figure of the highest ability.
“In Holger Badstuber, we have secured the services of a player with exceptional quality,” director Jochen Rottgermann said. “Holger knows the Bundesliga and VfB. Along with his sporting abilities, he also adds routine and experience to our squad. We are delighted that he will be wearing the VfB jersey in the future.”
The player, meanwhile, is eager to get going.
“No-one should ever forget their roots – and I haven’t either,” the 28-year-old explained. “VfB was and is something very special to me and the club had an immediate impact on me emotionally. The region, the fans, the mood of optimism… I can hardly wait to get stuck in!
