The Black Star is among three candidates shortlisted for the monthly gong

Ghana winger Christian Atsu is in contention for Newcastle United’s Player of the Month of August award.

The attacker is tipped to claim the accolade following an impressive run of games in the Premier League.

He was voted the club’s best player in the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the season opener before putting up another good display in a 1-0 reversal at Huddersfield Town.

In the Magpies’ last game before the international break, the 25-year-old was once again outstanding, assisting Joselu’s opener in the 3-0 triumph over West Ham United.

That said, it will not be a walk in the park for the Ghanaian as he faces competition from Ciaran Clark and Mikel Merino.

Meanwhile, Atsu has expressed excitement in having played all three league games thus far. He lasted the entire duration on all occasions.

“I’m very happy that I’m playing week in, week out,” the wideman said, according to the Chronicle Live.

“There’s a lot of competition in the game, so I just need to work hard and try to compete with my colleagues.

“I’m also happy for my friends on the pitch. Anytime I’m on the pitch I want the club to win. I want to do something for the club.

“For me, it’s very important that I keep working. We have a lot of talent - we have great players who are playing also wide, the same position as I play.

“I need to push myself to another level.”

Having played at St. James’ Park on loan from Chelsea last season, Atsu completed a permanent move to the Magpies in May.
