At one point on Saturday, it looked as if Al Jazira were going to be confirmed Arabian Gulf League champions as Al Ahli were tied 1-1 with Al Wahda with a quarter of an hour left to play.
However, with just 10 minutes on the clock, Everton Ribeiro's powerful shot from range sealed the three points for second-place Ahli, delaying Jazira's title celebrations.
After the match, Ahli boss Cosmin Olaroiu declared that his team intends to fight until the end. The Red Knights would need a miracle to wrestle the title out of Jazira's grasp though as the league leaders require just one draw from the remaining three fixtures.
"The Island need just one point out of three games but we will fight until the end," Olaroiu stated in the post-match press conference on Saturday.
The Romanian also took a bit of a swipe at the club's support, pointing to the poor turn out.
"I noticed the stadium was absent of fans and thought it was a friendly match," he said.
Olaroiu admitted that his team were not at their best on the day as they have one eye on other competitions.
"Our performance wasn't strong on the pitch today because of the team's thinking about the cup final and the upcoming AFC Champions League game," he concluded.
