‘Appiah's appointment a blessing to local players’

Ghana FA spokesman Ibrahim Sannie Daara believes Appiah's return as Ghana coach will benefit players in the Ghana Premier League

Ghana Football Association communications director Ibrahim Sannie Daara says new coach Kwesi Appiah's management of the home-based Black Stars in addition to the renowned team A is a blessing to players in the local topflight.

Unlike his predecessor Avram Grant, Appiah, whose reign began on Monday, has been mandated to concurrently handle both teams.

“If the Black Stars coach is also in charge of the local Black Stars, then it will offer him a firsthand view of the talent in the local league,” Sannie said, according to Ghana Soccer Net.

“More often you find out that when players come into the black stars from the local league, they are overawed by the occasion and the big names.

“But if you have a local national side who are coached by the senior team coach, through these processes of meeting and coaching, he will get to break down some of these fears and anxieties that local players have when they go to the national team."

A talking point of the Grant era was the apparent lack of opportunities for home-based players.

That, by far, was a result of the Israeli's disinterest in monitoring the local league, saying almost his entire Black Stars team ply their trade abroad.

It was, thus, little wonder that no outfield home-based player made Ghana’s 23-man squad at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
