The Black Stars coach has insisted that he is not working on tribal basis following allegations that he ‘hates’ players from the North of Ghana

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has denied reports suggesting that his Black Stars selection has recently been influenced by tribalism.

The 56-year-old has been criticised by a section of Ghanaians, particularly those from the northern part of the country, after he dropped the Ayew brothers as well as Mubarak Wakaso, Majeed Abdul Waris and Razak Brimah, all from the North, ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Uganda.

"I'm not tribal bias. I'm from the Brong Ahafo region and Emmanuel Agyemang Badu is from the same region too but he is not part of the team now. What is tribal about my selection? Appiah was quoted as saying by Ghanasoccernet.com.

"I am not tribalistic and will never be. I wished I don't talk about this but I have to clear the air. Anyone who knows me personally knows all my intimate friends are northerners and by extension Muslims.

"My team is not based on where some of the players come from but based on the performance of the players and their determination to fight for Ghana," he added.

"It can never be true that I am tribal bias in my call ups and selections. Kassim Nuhu, Abass Mohammed and Vincent Atingah are all from the north so what is the rationale behind the press conference held?"

Ghana shared the spoils goalless with Uganda, confirming their inability to make it to a fourth consecutive World Cup appearance, after Egypt defeated Congo 2-1 to claim Group E’s sole ticket.

The Black Stars are currently in Saudi Arabia to play the Green Falcons in an international friendly on Tuesday.
