Akwa Ibom's state government has appointed Otuekong Essien as the new technical director of Akwa United.
Essien, the deputy chief whip of the state's House of Assembly was unveiled on Monday. And he is saddled with the task of coordinating the technical department of the Nigeria Professional Football League side.
Head coach of the team, Abdu Maikaba, described the appointment as a 'well deserved' one.
"It is a well deserved appointment," Maikaba told Goal.
"Even before his appointment he has been lending a lot of his helping hand in some technical issue most especially as regards to the recruitment of players.
"He has love for the team and we are happy to have him as our technical director. Now he will have the license to come and support the team in full because the government has now given him the opportunity to act as the technical director of the team.
"He has been helpful, supportive to the team and, individually to the players and the technical crew and he is always with us in training, in matches.
"I wish him the best!"
The Godswill Akpabio Stadium outfit are placed 15th on the Nigerian topflight table.
