Aizawl FC won their maiden I-League title in only their second year of top-flight football, as they drew 1-1 with Shillong Lajong FC on the last matchday of the 2016/17 season.

The Reds totalled 37 points in the kitty from 18 games with near rivals Mohun Bagan finishing on 

The point meant that Mohun Bagan's 2-1 win was meaningless.

Initially relegated last season despite an eighth-placed finish, Aizawl FC were re-instated by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) after two Goan clubs had pulled out of India's topmost club football division.

Khalid Jamil was roped in by the highlanders as head coach weeks ahead of the new season and the 40-year-old delivered immediately, winning the club and himself their first major honour.
