Accam important to Chicago Fire

Veljko Paunovic says the Ghana international remains a key part of his outfit amid exit reports

Despite a reported bad blood, Chicago Fire manager Veljko Paunovic has hailed the influence of want-away attacker David Accam on his team.

With the winger unwilling to extend his expiring contract, relationship between the two men have reportedly hit the rocks as the former Helsingborg forward pushes for a move away.

Things seemingly worsened after the coach snubbed the Ghana international from his pick for the upcoming MLS all-star game, one the playmaker has described as "disappointing, coming from his own coach".

“David obviously scored the goal, it’s an important goal,” Paunovic said on Accam's strike against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.

"It was a great cross by Patrick Doody, it was a good assist and yeah he had the opportunity to tie the game.

"Another great build up and great cross from [Matt] Polster.

"Yeah of course, David is important for our team."

Tensions between the both men have led to the Black Star, unarguably Fire's most in-form man, falling to the bench in the last two matches.

That, however, has not prevented the Ghanaian from perpetuating his good form, scoring in each of the games as a substitute.

Incidentally, Fire ended up losing both games, after going 11 MLS matches unbeaten.

Accam, Fire's top scorer and best player in each of the last two seasons, has netted 12 times in 19 league games so far this campaign.
