Burnley's Owen Coyle: 'We were worth three points'
Burnley boss aggrieved after Villa late equalizer
Burnley manager Owen Coyle has praised his players and Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel after his side were held to a draw at Turf Moor thanks to a late Emile Heskey equalizer for Villa.
Burnley dominated the first half after Steven Caldwell gave the Clarets an early lead, but after Villa manager Martin O'Neill made some second-half substitutions bringing on Emile Heskey and giving Stuart Downing his debut, the visitors pulled an 86th minute goal back when the two combined for Heskey to finish.
Coyle told Sky Sports: "I thought we were worth three points. Having said that we have to recognise that Aston Villa looked to push us back in the second half, but within that we had some terrific opportunities. Brad Friedel made some outstanding saves in the game and we were worth the lead at half time, no doubt about it.
"We've paid a heavy price for not defending the second ball when it's come in, but you have to give credit to Aston Villa. But we are slightly disappointed given what we offered to the game today that we only have one point and not three"
However the Burnley manager was ultimately pleased with his side's performance, and their current standing as a mid-table Premier League outfit.
He said: "I think it's a measure of how far we've come that we're disappointed at not having beaten Aston Villa.
Two years ago when I came to this club if you'd have said that 'in two years time you'll draw at home with Aston Villa in the Premier League, will you take a point?' The answer would have been 'yes'"
He added: "We have to continue to evolve, continue to get better at this level, and if we do that then we have an opportunity to make sure we establish ourselves as a Premier League club, and that's our priority."
Aston Villa's Martin O'Neill agreed that his side had been overshadowed in the first-half, but felt that ultimately they were worth a point.
He told the BBC: "Turf Moor is a notorious place to come to, particularly this season, and it took us a long time to get going.
"In the second half we played very strongly and I thought that in the end we deserved an equalizer."
On the subject of Emile Heskey's late equalizer O'Neill added: "It was a great goal for Emile and I am delighted for him and with him."
