Patrick Vieira is standing by Thierry Henry, claiming the storm of protests against him is a "scandal".

Henry has come under heavy criticism following the World Cup play-off against Ireland on Wednesday. His handball set up William Gallas for the goal that pushed les Bleus through to South Africa.

However, Vieira has backed his former Arsenal team-mate. The midfielder has pointed the finger of blame towards the referee.

"The process that Henry is being put through is scandalous," Vieira told L'Equipe.

"The referee did not see the handball - that's it. You can understand that the Irish are unhappy, but it's not the first time we see referees make mistakes."
