Swansea City defender Ashley Williams has won the Welsh footballer of the year award.

The 25-year-old only made his international debut last year against Luxembourg and picked up his award at the Football Association of Wales awards dinner at Cardiff City's new stadium.

Winning the award is quite a remarkable achievement for Williams, who was playing non-league football at Hednesford six years ago. He worked as a waiter and at Drayton Manor theme park while playing part-time football.

He has missed only one of Wales' last 18 international games and admits that this has come as quite a shock to him.

"Things have moved very quickly for me, and I am a little shocked," he said.

"It is an honour to win such an award when you think exactly who has won it in the past."

Previous winners of the award include Ryan Giggs, Mark Hughes, John Hartson, Neville Southall and Craig Bellamy.
