Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was delighted with his side's display against struggling Hull City, in which they beat the Tigers 6-1.

“The team was doing well and Fernando was a key player in the first part; the team was following him,” he told Sky Sports. “I think it was a great performance,” he added.

Benitez believes Torres is growing with every game, as the Spaniard has now scored five goals in his last two outings.

“I think he (Torres) has shown in the last two games that he is improving, he is working harder, he has more chances,” added Benitez. “You could see today again when he is working on running the defenders, he can beat anyone.”

The Liverpool boss was happy his side overcame their nerves after the Tigers equalised minutes after the Reds took the lead in the 11th minute.

“We scored the first goal and it could be better when we concede and then obviously, you know, (we were) a little bit nervous.

“With the second goal I had confidence,” said the Liverpool manager. “You could see that everything - passing the ball, controlling them, stopping the counterattack, and lots of things that we were doing right.”

However, Benitez was critical of his side's defending when they conceded the goal.

“Sometimes when you play against big strikers the second balls are important. In this game we cleared the ball inside and we paid for this,” said the Spaniard.

On Gerrard's goal, the Liverpool manager said he thought the goal was a fluke.

He elaborated: “You have to ask him because it was a great goal but I am not sure that he was trying to score.”
