The Napoli striker struck a stunning free-kick to earn a 1-0 win over the Three Lions, much to the delight of club chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis

Napoli striker Lorenzo Insigne has paid tribute to his team-mates after scoring Italy's winner against England their first Euro Under-21 championship clash.

With the game locked at 0-0, the 22-year-old curled a sublime free kick into the top corner to secure maximum points for the Azzurrini and, while he was happy to net the winner, Insigne insists the team deserved credit on the whole for their performance.

“The victory was certainly not down to me, but I am happy to have scored a goal,” the forward told Rai Sport.

“I want to thank my team-mates for putting me in a position to do well. I thought we were denied two penalties, but if those who have seen the replays say it was only one then you’re probably right. We all accept the coach’s decisions and I would’ve been happy even if I had been substituted.”

The Partenopei youngster's goal drew congratulations from Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who expressed his pride at seeing one of his players fly the flag for his club in the tournament.

"Well done Lorezo, you defeated the Three Lions with a goal. I am proud of you, you are representing Napoli in front of the world and that is what counts," the De Laurentiis told Calcio Mercato.

The win puts Italy top of the group after one round of fixtures after hosts Israel drew 2-2 with Norway.
