The Leon midfielder had grown into a key player for Mexico, but Miguel Herrera's side will have to do without him in Brazil after he suffered the injury against Ecuador
The Mexican federation's media officials confirmed Montes was taken to Memorial Hospital in Arlington, Texas following a collision with Segundo Castillo.
Both players went into the challenge, and replays showed Montes suffering a gruesome injury. After being down on the field for several minutes, he was stretchered off, with several of his team-mates appearing to be in tears on the pitch.
The 28-year-old was later confirmed to have suffered a fracture to his leg and will therefore miss the finals in Brazil. Castillo was also taken to the hospital for evaluation on a right knee injury.
Rafa Marquez, the captain, was also taken to hospital during the match after taking a heavy knock to his toe.
Montes, 28, was expected to be a key player for El Tri in Brazil. He has 12 caps and three goals with the Mexico senior team to date.
