Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero were amongst the players selected in Argentina’s squad to face Romania in March, but there was still no call-up for Carlos Tevez and Esteban Cambiasso.
Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero and Tottenham’s Erik Lamela were other hopefuls who missed out on Alejandro Sabella’s selection in what will be the country’s only game before their World Cup warm-up matches in June.
Sabella named a 22-man squad to face Romania on March 5, although he can still add to that pool with players playing in Argentina in the weeks leading up to the game.
The latest squad selection was seen as the final opportunity for many fringe players to stake their claim for the short trip to Brazil for the World Cup this summer.
Tevez, who has scored 14 goals this season after joining Juventus last year, was last called up for the Copa America when Sergio Batista was still in charge in 2011 and recently admitted he has all but given up on playing in the world’s biggest tournament.
Getafe’s 24-year-old defender Lisandro Lopez was picked, while Gino Peruzzi and Atletico Madrid star Jose Sosa earned recalls to the set-up.
After facing Romania in Bucharest, Argentina face Trinidad & Tobago and Slovenia in June. They will then go on to face Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria in World Cup Group F.
