The Manchester United man gets the nod ahead of Jack Wilshere while Chris Smalling starts at right-back and Andros Townsend features once again after his debut heroics

Roy Hodgson has selected Michael Carrick in place of Frank Lampard for England's crucial World Cup 2014 qualifier against Poland on Tuesday night.

The Manchester United midfielder came on as a second-half substitute during the 4-1 victory over Montenegro on Friday and has now been promoted to the starting XI, with Jack Wilshere again missing out.

Chris Smalling, meanwhile, replaces the suspended Kyle Walker at right-back and Andros Townsend, who capped a man-of-the-match display with a goal on his debut last week, shakes off a knock to start on the right wing.

Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski leads the line for Poland, with Waldemar Fornalik's side aiming to claim just their second away win of their 2014 World Cup qualification campaign at Wembley.

England starting XI: Hart; Smalling, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines; Gerrard, Carrick; Welbeck, Rooney, Townsend; Sturridge.
