The Spurs striker has only started one Premier League game so far this season but hopes to shine, despite the arrival of Roberto Soldado, in order to make an impact in Brazil

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe is keen to ensure that he makes an impact at White Hart Lane this season so as to go to World Cup 2014 with England.

The 31-year-old was an unused substitute in Friday's 4-1 win over Montenegro but hopes to be involved in Tuesday's final qualifier against Poland, where victory will guarantee a place in Brazil.

"It would be a dream [to be involved against Poland], then having a good season and making sure I'm on the plane," Defoe told the media.

"To score the goals to help get us there, at Wembley, that would be special.

"It's in our hands. That's why you play football, to be involved in games like that."

Defoe leads Spurs' scoring charts this season with seven goals from nine games, though he has only started five of those, including just once in the Premier League.
