Noel King lands Ireland caretaker role

Irish under-21 boss will step up to the senior ranks on a temporary basis following the exit of Giovanni Trapattoni while Ray Houghton and Ruud Dokter continue the search
Ireland under-21 manager Noel King has been appointed caretaker manager of the senior squad by the FAI following the dismissal of Giovanni Trapatttoni.

King is likely to be in charge for the World Cup qualifiers against Germany and Kazakhstan next month while former international Ray Houghton and High Performance Director Ruud Dokter carry out a search of the market for suitable candidates for the manager's role on a permanent basis.

Harry McCue, King's assistant, has been placed in charge of the U21 side on an interim basis and will manage the team in their qualification matches against Romania in October.
