With a number of key players featuring for the senior side in Thursday's Europa League loss to Anzhi, the youngsters are all but out after crashing to a third consecutive loss
The Reds weren't at their strongest, with the likes of Suso, Conor Coady and Adam Morgan all having travelled to Moscow for the Europa League clash with Anzhi Makhachkala on Thursday.
Rosenborg were full of confidence, coming into the game off the back of wins against NextGen holders Inter and German side Borussia Dortmund. The group leaders took control early on, and Liverpool never looked like being able to get a foothold in the match.
Within a quarter-of-an-hour, the Reds were 2-0 down. First, midfielder Morten Strand found the net, before Robin Bjornholm doubled the lead to take total control. The game was effectively over on the 30 minute mark, with Alexandar Sorloth slotting a cool finish past Liverpool goalkeeper Ryan Fulton.
Both sides struggled to create clear cut chances after the break, and the 'Troll Kids' claimed a deserved victory to leave them top of the group, with maximum points from three games.
Liverpool remain bottom with no points so far, and will require a win in the reverse fixture on Tuesday if they are to have any chance of progressing. After four matches each, Inter and Dortmund are on seven and four points respectively, meaning the Reds have a mountain to climb to qualify and need maximum points if they are to have any chance.
