After seeing his side slump to a 3-1 defeat to the Pharaohs on Wednesday, Georgi Kondratyev expressed his belief that the North Africans could go far at London 2012
The Red Devils suffered a 3-1 defeat in their final Group C fixture against the African side on Wednesday and Kondratyev insists Egypt can make the final.
When asked about Hany Ramzy side’s chances of progressing to the latter stages, he told reporters: “I will not be surprised if they get to the finals, I will not at all.”
Kondratyev also admitted that he was fearful of the Egyptian side before the game, saying: “I was always afraid of the fast attacks that their team makes, our strength was to break those fast attacks.
“But in the second half it showed that we couldn’t do it anymore and the first goal broke our game and the mistakes for the second and third goals, those are mistakes that Egypt didn’t forgive us.”
The 52-year-old also conceded that his side were always going to struggle to qualify from a group which also contained Brazil.
“We were struggling until the very end to qualify from the group," he added.
“With the two teams like Egypt and Brazil really stronger than us, the only thing that could save us in the last match was the total concentration in defence, but those mistakes we made in the second half led to the defeat.”
