thumbnail Hello,

The former Liverpool, Manchester United and England striker announces he is calling it a day at the end of the term as Blackburn say farewell to their fifth manager of the season

So, this is it, the end of an era. Michael Owen is set to retire at the end of this season.

Yes, most of us expected this last summer so it comes as no real surprise but it is a sad day nonetheless, and football's finest have spent the day reminding us of their favourite Owen moments; that goal against Argentina, that FA Cup final double, that beard.

In not as wistful news, Blackburn have announced the sacking of manager Michael Appleton - the fifth man this season to try and work under owners the Venky’s - and Peter Odemwingie has unleashed another glorious Twitter rant (which you can read all about here). Football, eh?

"Can’t believe how many people have taken the time to tweet me a nice message. Appreciate it so much – Thank You."
Departing England icon Michael Owen is taken aback by the support he's received.

"Great lad, greatplayer, sorry to hear that Michael has decided to hang up his boots, good luck with whatever you’re gonna do @themichaelowen."
Good wishes for Owen from his former England and Liverpool teammate Robbie Fowler.

"Just came in from training seen the news that @themichaelowen is retiring. One hell of a player and great guy! #legend"
Stoke City team-mate Asmir Begovic coins in with some praise and a not-so-subtle hashtag.

"Michael Owen to retire at the end of the season. One of England’s greatest goal scorers, and a good bloke too. Wish him well."
The first entry from Gary Lineker in Word on the Tweet today.

"We all dreamed of being @themichaelowen scoring that goal against the Argie’s. Stuff of boys dreams that. Injury stopped him being 1 of greats"
Twitter fiend Joey Barton steps back from political chat and raging outbursts to lament Owen's injury woes.

"Seriously Blackburn???"
Blackburn Rovers' former goalkeeper Brad Friedel can't believe the news of Venky's latest managerial casualty.

"Those running Blackburn rovers are an embarrassment. So many club owners now haven’t got a clue. Michael Appleton 3rd to go this season."
Match of the Day pundit and crisp enthusiast Gary Lineker weighs in on the day's events again.

"Venkys. The absolute worst of football ownership. Killing a founder member, unforgivable. Get out. Go."
There aren't any punches pulled by Stan Collymoore.

"Just so you know I would still rather play for Blackburn rovers than down at turd moor #fact"
On-loan midfielder Colin Kazim-Richards tells Rovers fans he thinks there are worse places to be, and includes what might be the best typo ever if it wasn't intended.

"Very happy for our man S. Taylor called into England squad. Great guy and player. Deserves it."
Newcastle United's Sylvain Marveaux congratulates Steven Taylor on his call-up to the national side in place of Rio Ferdinand.
