Gomez missed out on inclusion in the Germany squad after an injury-interrupted season at Fiorentina but that did not prevent him from revelling in his country's remarkable display.

"Germany were marvellous; they are a very strong team," the former Bayern Munich forward told Sky Sport Italia. "My team-mates were perfect and we put on a great performance."

Gomez attributes the team's run to the final to a tremendous sense of togetherness within the squad.

"There are players who come from a lot of teams but everyone has known how to create a good group," the 28-year-old argued.

Gomez also took time out to praise fellow striker Miroslav Klose, who became the World Cup's all-time record goalscorer with his strike against Brazil.

"Klose is a great, a legend and an incredible player," the Viola attacker enthused.
