Van Gaal says his side have become comfortable in his new 5-3-2 system and feels the confidence within the camp is a cause for celebration.
"Nine points from three games, 10 goals for and three against, two unjustified penalties. No one expected this," he said after the match.
"The atmosphere in the group is fantastic. The players want to use the 5-3-2 system, they feel comfortable with it. That's extremely important.
"We gave virtually nothing away and got a couple of opportunities in the first half. In the second we made two world-class goals. It was more than deserved."
Netherlands will face one of Brazil, Croatia or Mexico in the next round.
