The Seattle Sounders and USA forward, whose goal helped down Ghana, is ready to return to the music industry with a 13-track record to follow up his 2006 single, 'Don't Tread'United States captain Clint Dempsey is hoping to spend most of his time hitting the back of the net at the World Cup in Brazil but will soon go back to hitting the "lab" as he prepares to release his first full rap album.
The 31-year-old Houston native is also known by the rap name 'Deuce' and made his musical debut shortly before World Cup 2006 with the release of the single 'Don't Tread'.
And Dempsey has revealed that he is ready to return to music with the release his full debut, a 13-track album titled 'The Redux'.
"We just were having fun with it and it ended up being an album," he told the Wall Street Journal.
While 'Don't Tread' may have been a target of ridicule for football fans around the world, it was well received in Dempsey’s home state of Texas.
That track featured well-respected local rapper Big Hawk, who was a major player on the Houston rap scene before his untimely death in 2006.
The brother of late 'H-Town' legend Fat Pat, Hawk was a member of the Screwed Up Clik – a supergroup formed by DJ Screw, the founder of the city's unique 'chopped and screwed' style that see DJs slow the music down to about half the pace.
Dempsey's first single from the album will be called 'It's Poppin' and features a 'screwed' chorus. It has been 'leaked' by DJ Skee, who has produced mixtapes for the likes of Snoop Dogg and The Game.
"He'll just call you sometimes and start freestyling - he doesn't even say hello," said Mike Chehade, a producer with whom Dempsey has been working.
"People automatically expect it to not be good... I'm not saying he's Eminem but he's definitely qualified."
Dempsey will turn his attentions back to the pitch on Sunday when the USA take on Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.
