The on-loan Juventus striker was left out of Cesare Prandelli's Italy squad for the tournament in Brazil but says the forwards selected deserved their inclusion

Southampton striker Dani Osvaldo has admitted that he was bitterly disappointed to be left out of Italy's preliminary World Cup squad.

The forward, who has ended the season on loan at Juventus, has been a mainstay in Cesare Prandelli's team of late and was expected to make the trip to Brazil to represent his adopted country.

However, the Argentina-born 28-year-old was snubbed by the former Fiorentina boss and has expressed his surprise at the decision despite backing the forwards selected in his place.

"I had been part of this group for two years and always felt important, so I was disappointed and upset at not being called up," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"It was a strange year for me, but having always been called in the past – and even starting in the last friendly against Spain in March – I hoped to be included.

"However, this takes nothing away from the forwards that were called. The statistics show they deserved it."
