After John Terry retired from the fold last week after being charged by the FA in the aftermath of his court case for a racially aggravated public order offence over Anton Ferdinand, many had tipped this to clear the way for his brother to win back his England place, but Hodgson has reportedly ruled out any such move.

"I have to say it is over for him and England. It has got to be the end of the road.
"He is pushing 34 and hasn't played for England for a long, long time."
Ferdinand won the last of his 82 England caps in 2011 and has struggled with both form and fitness for quite some time at club level, and despite Steven Caulker being named in the Under-21 squad, Hodgson looks set to turn his attentions elsewhere.
