Veteran Argentina star Javier Zanetti has admitted that he is surprised by the uninspiring start his side have made to the 2011 Copa America, but believes that it is only a matter of time before the hosts' fortunes begin to change.

The 37-year-old Inter man is the team's highest-capped player in history, having played no less than 143 times for his nation. Speaking in a press conference two days after the disappointing 0-0 draw against Colombia in Santa Fe, Zanetti declared his discontent with how the Copa had begun for the pre-tournament favourites.

"We never expected a start like this," he told reporters on Friday afternoon, as he and his team-mates prepare for a crucial Group A decider on Monday against Costa Rica. He added that he had sympathy for the fans who whistled them off the pitch on Wednesday evening.

"The people have every right to express their feelings, neither they or we were happy with the performance given. Ever since we arrived in Santa Fe we have been treated in the best possible way, we cannot complain about anything".

The veteran moved on to reference the reported disagreement between Lionel Messi and Nicolas Burdisso, who clashed in a heated verbal battle after the final whistle.

"It is normal, these things happen in matches. I argued with [Gabi] Milito in the Bolivia game, and we are still friends," Zanetti clarified.

"We have it in us to play well, we know in the first two games things did not go our way. No-one wants to win and play well more than us."
