Former England international Mark Chamberlain admitted he missed his 19-year-old son's excellent strike after falling asleep following an early start and a 'negative' first half

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s father Mark Chamberlain revealed he missed his son’s goal for England against Brazil after falling asleep during the match at the Maracana.

The Arsenal attacker cancelled out Fred’s second-half opener for Brazil before Wayne Rooney put the Three Lions 2-1 ahead, but Paulinho netted minutes later to ensure the Selecao recorded a 2-2 draw.

Keeper Joe Hart had helped keep the score at 0-0 as the World Cup 2014 hosts enjoyed a comfortable first half, until the home side took the lead shortly before the hour mark when Fred was on hand to convert after Hernanes’ shot had struck the bar.

Oxlade-Chamberlain soon appeared from the bench, however, and minutes later had struck his third goal for the national team to equalise against the run of play, although his former international father Mark went on to tell reporters after the match: "I didn’t see it.

"I was dropping his Alex's mother off at the airport at 6am this morning so I fell asleep during the game. It was on tape so I’ll watch it in a minute. I realised when his agent rang me up."

Oxlade-Chamberlain had picked up the ball in midfield and driven towards the Brazil defence before passing to Frank Lampard on the edge of the penalty area, who then found Wayne Rooney who laid the ball off for the 19-year-old to strike a swerving right-footed effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

His introduction in midfield in place of Phil Jones had helped Roy Hodgson’s side pose more of a threat going forward, and former Three Lions winger Mark added: "I was watching the game, it was a bit negative in the first half but England were more positive in the second half and Alex played well in the hole behind the strikers.

"He plays wide right, but that’s his third-best position. Midfield or playing behind the striker is his best position."
