Five players withdraw from Republic of Ireland squad for Oman friendly

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has seen five of his squad members leave the squad ahead of their friendly clash with Oman.

After the World Cup qualifying win over Kazakhstan, Glenn Whelan, John O'Shea and Jon Walters return to their Premier League clubs.

Darren O'Dea will also fly back to Canada to join up with his Toronto FC team-mates and Robbie Keane has returned to LA Galaxy.

Manchester United youngster Robbie Brady has been called up to the senior side to plug the gaps left by the departures.

James McClean remains in the squad after apologising for his Twitter outburst in the aftermath of the 2-1 win over Kazakhstan.

An FAI statement confirmed that manager Giovanni Trapattoni had discussed the matter with the Sunderland man in front of the squad and the matter is now closed.
