Fabio Capello says 'really interesting' trio Phil Jones, Kyle Walker & Jack Rodwell have attributes to be top England internationals
National team manager gives clear signal that youthful trio have a good chance of making his Euro 2012 squad after impressing in 1-0 friendly victory over Sweden at Wembley
Fabio Capello praised youthful trio Phil Jones, Kyle Walker and Jack Rodwell for having all the attributes to be modern internationals as he gave a clear signal they are in the running for his Euro 2012 squad.
The England manager singled the three youngsters out for praise following England’s convincing 1-0 victory over Sweden at Wembley.
Capello said: “For me it was very important to see Jones, Walker and Rodwell play against a team who has good organisation on the pitch and is difficult to play against. The answer I received from this performance is really important. I thought these three players played really well.
“During these [friendly] games [including against Spain last Saturday] I’m looking for something new. I found it. I found really interesting players. These three players are really good technically, physically and all these players are fast, which is important in modern football.”
Capello also dropped a hint that he now regards Manchester United’s Jones as the back-up to Scott Parker as the team’s midfield anchorman rather than the less athletic Gareth Barry, who performed that role in last year’s World Cup debacle.
He said: “It was important to see Jones in the position I normally play Parker in front of the back four. Also, to see Rodwell. It’s important to win, always. It’s important to beat Sweden after 43 years [England had gone that length of time since beating the Swedes] but it was more important to see these players against teams that are difficult to beat.”
Asked if Rodwell has moved into contention for a place in his squad for Ukraine and Poland following his hugely encouraging first two international displays over the last four days, Capello gave little away.
He said: “At the end of the season I will decide. I hope all the midfielders will be fit. I hope so. Rodwell is a really interesting player, a young player. I hope the competition to play the Euros will be really strong for all the players.”
Capello was delighted that “today we played without fear” but he was less enamoured with how England’s defenders launched some of the team’s attacks against Sweden.
He said: “One thing I didn’t like was too many passes to the keeper [Joe Hart]. The defenders sometimes needed to choose a different pass. Not always to the keeper or a long ball.
“Sometimes it is difficult to find a solution. I asked the players. The pitch was not perfect this evening. The next games they need to improve the possession from the defenders.”
