The MLS side may have been thrashed by the Liga champions on Thursday, but the former Bayer Leverkusen attacker was full of praise for his record-breaking compatriotReal Madrid and LA Galaxy have revealed that they are keeping a close eye on the 2012 London Olympics, and particularly the progress of American swimmer Michael Phelps.
Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria were on form as Madrid ran out 5-1 winners in a friendly in Los Angeles, and Blancos defender Alvaro Arbeloa stated that he has been impressed by Phelps, who claimed his 20th Olympic medal - 16 of them gold - on Thursday.
"We are watching Phelps winning a gold medal, so congratulations for him," Arbeloa said. "I think he’s fantastic."
Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was also in awe of the world's most decorated Olympian.
"He's a stud. He's a champion, he's the greatest ever," Donovan said. "With all that we hear about and read about him, the guy can still do it and it's impressive to see him as an athlete."
After the United States national team failed to qualify for the Games, Donovan stated that he would have liked to represent his country in London.
"It would have been nice," he conceded. "It's fun to see the country get behind all these athletes. I find myself watching sports I would never watch.
"I was watching badminton the other day, cheering for two guys I’d never seen before because they were American. It's fun that people get to do that and I wish we were a part of it."
