The Latics suffer their maiden loss of the close season to the experienced La Liga side as they build up to their opening Premier League game with Chelsea
Latics boss Roberto Di Matteo named a team, and included Chelsea target Victor Moses in his starting line-up for the pre-season meeting with the Spanish La Liga side.
New signing Ivan Ramis also started for Wigan for the first time after sealing his move from Mallorca to the DW Stadium earlier this week.
The Latics were unbeaten going into the clash with the Balearic based side after pre-season tours to Austria and Sweden, and several games against local sides. However, their opponents have also been in good form having gone unbeaten in the close season.
It was the home side who started off the better, knocking the ball around confidently and thought they had opened the scoring after five minutes, but Franco Di Santo's effort was ruled out after the linesman adjudged the ball to have gone out of play beforehand.
The Latics continued to dominate proceedings and went close with good efforts from Di Santo and Moses, but they also had to be wary of a Mallorca team who were comfortable in possession and caused a few problems for the home side.
Neither side were able to break the deadlock going into half-time but just five minutes into the second period and the visitors took the lead.
Wigan were slow to react to Mallorca striker Joao Victor breaking into the area, and he smashed a volley past the helpless Ali Al-Habsi to give the Spanish side an early second half lead.
Despite falling behind, Wigan continued to dominate possession and could perhaps have regarded themselves as a bit unlucky to be behind with an hour on the clock, after good efforts from Jordi Gomez and Shaun Maloney which were well saved by the Mallorca keeper.
And despite dominating the ball, the Latics were unable to carve open any clear-cut chances and needed Al-Habsi to keep them in the game with an excellent save in the final 10 minutes of the game when he dived fully to his right to deny Victor a second of the game.
But with five minutes to go the match was settled as Mallorca grabbed a second. Some sloppy defending from the home side allowed Sergi Enric to get in behind the Latics back line and square the ball across to Kevin Garcia, who tapped home to wrap up the game.
Roberto Martinez introduced new singing Fraser Fyvie to give him a first taste of playing at the DW, but he had little time to make an impact as the Lancashire side slid to their first defeat of pre-season.
Wigan will be looking to bounce back and get a win under their belt before their first game of the new Premier League season, a tough looking encounter at home to Champions League winners Chelsea.
