Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes targeting more silverware this season following Community Shield win
Man of the match desperate for more trophies…
By Danny Hart
The Red Devils beat Chelsea at Wembley in the season’s curtain-raiser as goals from Luis Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov were enough to secure a 3-1 win, despite the Blues’ late fight back through Salmon Kalou.
Despite admitting the Community Shield is part of Manchester United’s pre-season, Scholes, man of the match against Chelsea, is pleased to have started the season by winning some silverware.
“I think both teams really wanted to win. It was hot so I found it difficult, but we’re happy with the win,” he told Sky Sports.
“We know it’s the Charity Shield and it’s only pre-season but we wanted a trophy and managed to do it.”
The Reds Devils lost all three of their matches against Chelsea last season, including losing the Community Shield on penalties, and Scholes is happy that United have got one over on their rivals.
He said: “It’s always nice to beat them, they’re a quality team. We got off to the right start and hopefully we can carry on this season.”
United finished as runners up to Chelsea in the league last season and were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, and Scholes hopes to go one better than last year’s achievements.
“We weren’t far off last year - only one point off. It was disappointing to go out of the Champions League, but hopefully this year we can go one step further,” he said.
Scholes was asked to return to international football before the World Cup and when asked is he would still consider a recall, he said: “No. I don’t think so, no.”
