Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva is hopeful he will be able to hold on to the captain's armband when the club's established stars return to first team action.

Lucas, 23, led Roy Hodgson's side in last night's 2-0 Europa League qualifying victory against FK Rabotnicki. The Brazil international was handed the honour after stalwarts Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher continued to get back to full fitness after only returning to training recently after their World Cup 2010 exertions.

Speaking to the Press Association, Lucas revealed he was keen to stay as skipper in the coming weeks.

"It is a really good achievement for me. I am really proud, really happy, but the most important thing was the win," Lucas noted.

"I know there are a lot of senior players in front of me but I hope I did a really good job and hopefully I will keep it. We are really pleased. It is our first win of the season and it was an important game.

"We got two away goals against a difficult team, so we have started the right way. Hopefully we will keep the same for the next match."
