Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is sure Thursday's friendly with Villarreal will serve as great preparation for the forthcoming Champions League qualifier.

Gomes, 29, has linked up with the rest of the Spurs squad after he sat out the recent tour to the United States after his exertions with Brazil at World Cup 2010. His return has coincided with the serious preparations for the upcoming qualifying tie to reach Europe's elite club competition.

Speaking to Spurs' official website, Gomes insisted much could be learned from facing the La Liga challengers.

"It's good to be back home and playing in front of our own fans," Gomes revealed.

"They helped us a lot last season and we hope they do so again this season because they push us on so much. We need this in order to win competitions and games - we need them all the time.

"Villarreal are a great team and a good side in Europe. They have the experience of Champions League and Europa League football.

"We need to play against teams like this so we can do a good job in the Champions League, so I'm looking forward to this first game at the Lane. We hope to do a great job in front of our own fans."
