Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has called on the club's youngsters to seize their chance while the World Cup 2010 stars are away.

Van der Sar, 39, is the elder statesman of the United squad that has travelled to North America for the on-going tour. While established names such as Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Ji-Sung Park sat out the 3-1 victory against Celtic on Friday night, England youth internationals Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley were getting on the score sheet.

Speaking to The Mirror, Van Der Sar urged the starlets to continue to shine before the senior players return next month.

“I think Ferguson is clever enough to know when he plays certain players in games, and when to rest them," Van Der Sar said.

"If a player is playing on Tuesday he knows he can’t play them on Saturday, and he saves them. The training methods are perfect.

“There are still eight or nine players missing on our tour so it’s a chance for some of the boys to get some experience.

“It’s up to them to grab their chance. The young guys have to show it now because in August when the other boys are back it’s going to be hard.”
