The trio were believed to be on their way to protest at the Group D fixture, but were followed by plainclothes policemen and held in Donetsk while the game was being played out.
The activists have been named as Alexandra Shevchenko, Yana Zhadanova and Anna Bolshakova, and it is thought that local authorities used force to prevent the women from getting to the match.
No explanation was given for the women’s detainment, who were eventually released without charge.
The trio are part of the feminist group Femen, who have been protesting against domestic violence and prostitution in Ukraine by stripping in public places to showcase the plight of women.
