Euro 2012 a 'massive' tournament for Parker

Tottenham midfielder says England are going to very organised under Roy Hodgson in Ukraine and Poland but that won’t stop them scoring some "fabulous" goals this summer
Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker has revealed his excitement of travelling to a major tournament with England.

Euro 2012 will be the 31-year-old's first tournament, having spent many years out of the international set-up.

Parker first made his debut in 2003 but has only managed 13 appearances in the nine years, however with Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry both out of the competition injured, Parker will play a crucial role in England’s midfield.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "It's a massive tournament for me personally. I have been looking forward to [my first tournament] for a long time and I am over the moon.

"You always watch the games and wish you could be there or playing a part in it but for one reason or another it wasn't meant to be.

"I suppose now I am here I need to try to soak up every bit of it and do the best I can when I'm called upon."

The combative midfielder has formed a solid partnership with Steven Gerrard in since Roy Hodgson took control and he believes it will be a crucial area of the pitch for England.

Parker told reporters in Krakow: "If you switch off for one second at the level we are at, then it normally ends up in the back of your net.

"Midfield is obviously a crucial part of a team and a game. You obviously need to win the battles in midfield and from there give yourselves a platform to go and attack and obviously be solid in defence.

"Under this manager we are going to have a very organised team, a team which is tactically aware and if you have to grind out results then that is how it has to be.

"But we have also got plenty of players in this squad who can go the other way and score some fabulous goals."
