The shotstopper believes the Manchester United striker has all the ability to become a top player for the Three Lions and feels his goal at Wembley proved that he is a top finisher
The shotstopper played with the striker during the 2010-11 season, when he was on-loan at the Black Cats, and he believes the striker has the ability to become a top player for club and country.
And Mignolet insists his former team-mate has proven he belongs in a Three Lions shirt after a fine display against Belgium.
"He’s a talent. A really gifted player. And he just needs to keep reproducing that form and that consistency to start reaching his full potential" - Simon Mignolet
He told the Sunderland Echo: “Danny [Welbeck] is a good player, a very good player. He has proved that to everyone by scoring goals at Manchester United and now for England.
“And if you can do that – do it for United and do it for England - then no-one can argue you are not a very good player.
“I knew that already though. I trained regularly with him on the training ground at Sunderland a couple of seasons ago and as well as on the training ground I watched him in matches.
“He’s a talent. A really gifted player. And he just needs to keep reproducing that form and that consistency to start reaching his full potential.
“I hope he does that and I hope he does well in the Euros.”
Welbeck netted the only goal of the game as Roy Hodgson’s side beat Belgium at Wembley on Saturday in England’s final warm-up game before Euro 2012.
And the Black Cats keeper has pinpointed the United striker’s finish as evidence that he has quality and confidence in front of goal.
“That moment with the goal against me. You would have expected most players just to go for power," he added.
“I was ready for that and would have fancied myself in that situation. But he did the only thing probably that would have beaten me – which was a very difficult chip.
“That’s what puts Danny among the very top strikers around on his day because in order to score goals like that, you have to weigh up the best options within a split second and then, not only that, but prove capable of executing them too.”
