Manchester United's Wayne Rooney: I would love to captain England but Liverpool's Steven Gerrard is the perfect choice
The striker, who led the Three Lions in a friendly against Brazil over two years ago, would be interested in succeeding John Terry but has tipped his team-mate for the role
By Danny Hart
The Three Lions are currently searching for a new skipper following the FA's decision to strip John Terry of the armband after it was revealed that his court case for allegedly racially abusing Anton Ferdinand had been adjourned until after Euro 2012.
Rooney wrote on Twitter: "For everyone asking i would love to be england captain. But thats upto new manager to decide. Gerrard is perfect choice for me."
The 26-year-old has captained his country on one occasion before, leading an injury-hit side to a 1-0 friendly defeat against Brazil in Doha in November 2009.
Despite England still being without a permanent manager following the resignation of Fabio Capello, Gerrard is favourite for the captaincy, with Scott Parker and Joe Hart also suggested as potential candidates.
