Goal.com readers are split as to whether Fabio Capello was a success as England manager.

An incredibly slim majority of 50.66% were of the belief that the Italian left the country after a positive experience with the Three Lions squad.

Indeed, many statistics were also in Capello’s favour - he has won a higher percentage of matches than any other post-war England manager.

However, a poor showing by England at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will likely be forever held against the ex-Juventus boss by fans.

Only 42 votes prevented the 65-year-old from being branded a failure in our online poll, proving how divided the attitude is towards Capello’s reign.

The Italian resigned on Wednesday evening after unsuccessful talks with the FA over the stripping of John Terry as Three Lions captain.

JJ was full of optimism regarding the news of the resignation, stating:

"I see good things happening to English national team now that Fabio Capello is gone."

Willmaith believes more of the onus should be put on the players, not the manager:

"The manager was good enough, but England definitely were not good enough for the World Cup, perhaps with rising stars such as Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshere, Henderson, Sturridge, Jones etc."

...and Mike agrees, dragging the FA into the argument in the process:

"The reason that the England team fail are the FA and the players. Fabio Capello is a great manager and he has shown this by resigning over a point of principle. The FA should have consulted with him over the removal of Terry as captain, after all what has Fabio done other than stand up for the principle of innocent until proven guilty."
