It was meant to be straightforward. Fabio Capello would see out the remainder of his contract by guiding England through Euro 2012, preferably to the latter stages, where he would then step aside, paving the way for Harry Redknapp to take over - but when is the England national team set-up ever that simple?

Capello's decision to walk away from the Three Lions four months before the start of the tournament in Poland and Ukraine was a surprise, to say the least. Despite publically expressing his disdain at the FA's decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy, no-one realistically expected a resignation letter to be falling on David Bernstein's desk.

So, with the former Real Madrid coach's four-year tenure as national team manager now at an end, Goal.com takes a look back at the highs and lows of Capello's England reign.
