Carlo Ancelotti backs Fabio Capello over England captaincy row: ‘No reason’ to remove John Terry

Carlo Ancelotti has backed countryman Fabio Capello’s stance on the FA’s decision to remove John Terry as England captain amid the ongoing racism furore.

The Italian, who previously managed the defender at Chelsea and now works at Paris Saint-Germain, believes that it was wrong to demote the skipper before his trial for allegedly racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand takes place in July, following the conclusion of Euro 2012.

Ancelotti told Sky Sports News: “I didn't understand. I think there is no reason.

“I am of the same thought as Capello. There is no decision that he is guilty, so they have to wait.”

The Reggiolo-born coach was in charge at Stamford Bridge when Terry was previously stripped of the national captaincy in 2010 for allegedly having an affair with the ex-girlfriend of England team-mate Wayne Bridge.

“I think so,” the 52-year-old added when asked if he believes that the English place too much importance in the role.

“In England, to be the captain, you have a lot of responsibility and all the people are following your behaviour.

“In other countries, it is not so important to be captain of the national team.”

Ancelotti’s comments come after Capello publicly voiced his disagreement with the FA over its handling of the Terry situation, with the Three Lions boss set to meet with the governing body to discuss the issue.
