Former Italy star Sandro Mazzola: It's better to meet Spain in the group stages at Euro 2012

The 69-year-old is unconcerned by the prospect of facing the reigning champions in the opening fixture of Group C, and is certain the Azzurri will progress

Sandro Mazzola
Former Italy star Sandro Mazzola has stressed that it is not necessarily a bad thing that the Azzurri were paired with Spain in Group C during Friday's Euro 2012 draw in Kiev.

Cesare Prandelli's men will also meet the Republic of Ireland and Croatia in the group stage and Mazzola feels that the draw could end up benefiting the Nazionale.

"I think that it's better to meet Spain right away than to be paired with them in the next round," Mazzola said to RAI.

"We already know Ireland pretty well, while Croatia are a pretty good team as well.

"However, Italy are superior in my opinion, even if Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano don't recover in time."

Italy kick off their campaign against Spain on June 10, before meeting Croatia four days later, and then Ireland on June 18.
