thumbnail Hello,

Penalty against Scotland sees forward reach 44-goal tally...

David Villa has officially drawn level with Raul to become Spain's all-time leading goalscorer with 44 goals to date, but will move ahead of the Schalke forward by virtue of goals-to-game ratio.

The Barcelona forward netted in the 44th minute against Scotland in Tuesday evening's Euro 2012 qualifier from the penalty spot to bag his 44th goal in just 68 appearances (0.64 average), compared to 102 for Raul (0.43).

Villa made his debut for Spain in February 2005 under Luis Aragones in a 5-0 win over San Marino in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

He had to wait nine months for his first international goal, however, scoring a vital equaliser for Spain in a 1-1 draw with Slovakia in the same qualifying campaign. It was at the 2006 World Cup in Germany that he took over Raul's place as the team's first choice striker, before successfully inheriting his famous No. 7 jersey long term.

Ever since then, Villa has consistently been on the rise, picking up the Golden Boot at Euro 2008 with four goals and finishing as joint-top scorer at the 2010 World Cup, a tournament where he netted five times.
