thumbnail Hello,

But boss admits he'll change tactics against Spain...

Craig Levein has defended his decision to play with no orthodox strikers in Scotland's 1-0 defeat to the Czech Republic.

The Scotland boss started the game with a 4-6-0 formation trying to contain the attacking flair of the Czechs, but the plan back-fired when Roman Hubnik headed the winner from a set piece in the second half.

Levein told BBC Scotland: “I thought it [the system] was working very well, we lost a goal to a set piece but I can't fault the lads for what they did tonight.

“You saw how open the game became tonight when we went to two up top and that gives you an indication at how good the Czech Republic are."

Scotland managed to contain the home side easily for 60 minutes but wave after wave of Czech attacks finally wore the visitors down.

Levein was particularly disappointed with the way his side conceded the goal.

He said: “The only disappointing thing from tonight is that we lost a goal to a set piece which generally we're pretty good at defending.

“Obviously the plan was not to lose a goal, and then when we lose a goal everything changes of course. But I can't fault them, we had some pretty good performances out there and they certainly ran themselves into the ground.

“I feel for the players who worked extremely hard tonight. But we've got a game on Tuesday and it gives us the chance to bounce back from this defeat,” he added.

Despite being happy with his side’s formation and performance, Levein has stated his tactics will be different against the world champions at Hampden Park on Tuesday night.

He said: “I think I've made it pretty clear that I picked a system to play against the Czech Republic, but we'll pick a different system for Spain on Tuesday night."
