Spain striker David Villa disappointed not to break Raul's goal record against Liechtenstein
Barcelona forward equals legend's 44-goal haul...
By Paul Madden
Record Spain goalscorer David Villa admits he was disappointed not to break Raul's international goalscoring record after equalling the 44-goal mark against Liechtenstein in their opening Euro 2012 qualifier.
The Barcelona forward bagged a goal, while strike partner Fernando Torres scored twice to give the reigning champions a straightforward win over their hosts, with Manchester City's David Silva netting the other.
But Villa had a glorious opportunity to net number 45 late on, seeing his strike come back off the crossbar.
"It's a shame because I had a good chance to score even in the last minute of the game, but the ball came off the bar," Villa told AS.
"It was a shame, but there is no rush and it is important that the team was good.
"We have performed well and got a good result here, that after all is what counts. Now, even a friendly, we must also win against Argentina.
"I hope to continue in the national team for a long time to come and if I play more games I will score more goals. The important thing was that the team achieved the victory."
Spain's friendly against the Argentines takes place on Tuesday evening.
