Blackpool defender Craig Cathcart recalled to Northern Ireland squad for Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovenia
Youngster Johnny Gorman also earns call-up...
By George Watts
The promising defender, who is yet to win his first cap for his country, is now experiencing regular Premier League football for the first time in his career following his move to Blackpool from Manchester United in the summer.
Cathcart’s former United team-mates Jonny and Corry Evans also make the squad, whilst the Fulham defender Aaron Hughes returns to the fold after recovering from injury.
There is also a surprise inclusion for schoolboy Johnny Gorman of Wolverhampton Wanderers, despite the 17-year-old not having featured in Mick McCarthy’s first team yet.
The squad still contains a strong backbone of experienced players with the likes of Birmingham City’s Maik Taylor, Rangers midfielder Steven Davis, and record goalscorer David Healy all included in the travelling party.
Celtic midfielder Paddy McCourt is not included in the 20-man squad despite his recent impressive form for Neil Lennon’s side.
Manager Nigel Worthington will be hoping that his team can produce a better result and performance than the last time they played in Maribor where they suffered a 2-0 defeat in a World Cup qualifier in 2008.
The full squad is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Maik Taylor (Birmingham), Jonathan Tuffey (Inverness), Alan Blayney (Linfield)
Defenders: Jonny Evans (Man Utd), Stephen Craigan (Motherwell), Craig Cathcart (Blackpool), Gareth McAuley (Ipswich), Aaron Hughes (Fulham), Chris Baird (Fulham)
Midfielders: Grant McCann (Peterborough), Chris Brunt (West Brom), Jonny Gorman (Wolves), Corry Evans (Man Utd), Steven Davis (Rangers), Sammy Clingan (Coventry)
Strikers: David Healy (Sunderland), Warren Feeney (Oldham), Kyle Lafferty (Rangers), Martin Paterson (Burnley), Rory Patterson (Plymouth)
