Steven Gerrard should have kept the England captaincy, not Rio Ferdinand say UK readers

Liverpool man unlucky to give up the armband
An overwhelming majority of UK readers believe Steven Gerrard deserved to keep the England captain's armband, after manager Fabio Capello handed it back to the returning Rio Ferdinand.

Gerrard had led the Three Lions in World Cup 2010 and subsequent games against Hungary, Bulgaria and Switzerland, after previous captain Ferdinand broke down with injury on the verge of the tournament in South Africa.

But the Manchester United man's belated return has seen the Italian coach return to the former arrangement.

68.84 per cent of readers disagree with Capello, however, believing Gerrard deserved to keep the armband. Just 22.09% agree with the decision to return Ferdinand the captaincy.

Of the remaining voters, just 3.58% believe that an entirely different player should have been appointed as captain, while 5.49% believe it doesn't matter who leads out the side when they take the pitch at Wembley on Tuesday against Montenegro.
