Modric: Ronaldo ban is unfair

The former Tottenham star voices his frustration with the attacker's three-match ban, while he feels that Real Madrid did not really need Gareth Bale against Atletico Madrid
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric believes that Cristiano Ronaldo has been unfairly punished for his red card against Athletic Bilbao.

The Portuguese attacker was hit with a three-match ban following his dismissal on Sunday and will consequently miss games against Villarreal, Getafe and Elche, much to the Croatian's dismay.

"Cristiano's suspension is not fair because he didn't do anything wrong," the former Tottenham midfielder told Madrid's official website.

"We can't do anything about it, though. We all have to do more when Cristiano it is not playing because he is a very important player for us."

Gareth Bale was not risked in Wednesday's 3-0 Copa del Rey win over Atletico Madrid and Modric feels that it was the correct decision to rest the Welshman.

"He trained normally over the last two or three days," he added. "The coach did not want him to force anything against Atletico because we have another important match on Saturday and Cristiano cannot play in it.

"It is important for him to rest because there is no rush."

Madrid take on Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.
